Job Description:                       Event Server

Department:                             Catering-Banquet Operations 

Reports to:                                Event Planner(s)

                                                 Event Captain(s)


To provide guest with efficient and attentive service which will present a positive image of Marigold Catering, while exceeding the guest's expectations. All functions are to be carried out in an environment of teamwork.


  • Be on time for your shift
  • Attentively listening to pre-shift meeting conducted by the Event Planner and/or Captain. Meetings should consist of function particulars and expectations of the guests
  • Perform side work
  • Open bottles of wine for guests
  • Set and bus tables
  • Perform set-up and breakdowns of various stations (i.e. buffets, dessert, and coffee)
  • Communicate with support crew and management
  • Set up banquet room as instructed by Event Planner and/or Captain to include linen, service-ware and glassware
  • Maintain complete knowledge of correct maintenance and use of equipment. Use equipment only as intended
  • Maintain complete knowledge of and comply with all Marigold policies, service, procedures and standards
  • Anticipate guests' needs, respond promptly and acknowledge all guests, however busy and whatever time of the day
  • Maintain positive guests relations at all times
  • Resolve guest complaints, ensuring guest satisfaction
  • Monitor and maintain cleanliness, sanitation and organization of assigned work areas
  • Practice "Clean as you go" policy
  • Perform other duties assigned 
  • Maintain complete knowledge of service requirements for assigned function:



  • Complete pre-function side work:
  • Maintain complete knowledge of and strictly abide by state of Ohio liquor regulations, particularly those prohibiting service to minors, intoxicated person and drunk driving
  • Order of service, traffic flow in room and VIP's
  • Special request/arraignments
  • Schedule hours of service
  • Group name, type of function and expected attendance
  • Station assignment and table set-up
  • Prices for specified bar selections on cash bars
  • Particular characteristics/description of wines/champagne ordered
  • Detailed menu selections, major ingredients, appearance, texture, quality     standards, garnish and method of presentation
  • Check quality and amount of all stock and supplies using check list
  • Transport necessary supplies from storage areas to service areas
  • Fold napkins, set linen on tables
  • Set tables according to service standards
  • Set up all condiments (butter, jellies, cream, juice, etc.)
  • Ensure a sufficient supply of all silverware, glassware and chinaware for service
  • Check cleanliness and condition of assigned stations and service area; rectify any deficiencies
  • Set up break down station as instructed by Captain
  • Greet guests as they arrive and assist them with seating
  • Retrieve alcoholic beverage items from bar (unless noted) and serve guests
  • Open and serve wine/champagne bottles
  • Serve all food courses and non-alcoholic beverage items to the guest in accordance with function requirements
  • Clear each course following Marigold catering service standards
  • Serve the food and/or beverage in the order and to the expectation of the Event Planner and/or Captain
  • Promptly bus dishes as guests complete each course and/or meal at the end of the meal or function
  • Once function is complete, breakdown according to Event Planner and/or Captain's specifications
  • Remove all tabletop items, linen and equipment from the function area designated by Event Planner and/or Captain
  • Set up, monitor, refresh and breakdown coffee stations, receptions and buffet tables for specified function according to Marigold Catering service standards
  • Complete closing side work
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Event Planner and/or Captain


  • Communication: This skill means the ability to listen, write and speak effectively. For Server position, this skill is a very critical element which contributes to business success.
  • Flexibility: This skill requires the ability of controlling multiple assignments and tasks in which you can identify their important level then decide which should be done first, which should be last. You also need to adjust the tasks to suit with real condition and assignments.
  • Problem-solving: During work, there are many problems including unexpected issues that requires the ability of control and deal with them quickly and efficiently. It means that being a server, when cope with problem, you need to collect information, analyze situation, point out solutions and apply them to solves perfectly in reasonable time.
  • Teamwork, to finish the work with highest result you need to work with many group, therefore, the ability of team-working is not an exception. So besides working individually you also can work in group in a professional manner to make sure that the tasks can be competed.
  • Responsibility: It is regular requirement. For position of server you also come to event on time, work and take responsibilities in given time.


  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, memos and to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in oneonone and small group situations to customers, clients, and co-workers.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide to perform these operations using units of American money, weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carrying out detailed but not complicated written or oral instructions. 
  • Ability to deal with recurring problems by incorporating Marigold Catering guidelines and standards.
  • Knowledge of food and wine.
  • Must emulate Marigold Catering Culture.
